Made for the skin you actually have.

Ami Cole formulas are built around real, textured, uneven skin — not studio lighting. Each product blends in fast, breathes on your face all day, and skips the chalky cast or cakey buildup that most makeup leaves behind.

About brand

Ami Colé was named after Aminata “Ami” Colé, the mother of founder Diarrha N’Diaye-Mbaye. Diarrha grew up in Harlem, spending long afternoons in her mother’s hair braiding salon, surrounded by Black women getting ready for the day. That environment shaped what she eventually built: a beauty line meant to feel like an extension of the women who inspired it, not a version of someone else.

Before starting the brand, Diarrha spent years inside the beauty industry, working on the sales floor at Sephora and later on marketing and product teams at L’Oréal Paris, Temptu, and Glossier. That work gave her a close look at how the industry operated, and how often makeup made for deeper skin tones felt like an afterthought — added to a lineup rather than built into it from the start. She kept running into the same problem herself: products that either didn’t match her complexion or ignored her undertone entirely.

Ami Colé launched in 2021 with a small set of products built around a simple idea: a five-minute makeup routine that still let skin look like skin. Rather than chase heavy coverage, the brand leaned into a “no-makeup makeup” approach — lightweight formulas meant to be worn daily, not layered on for special occasions.

The shade ranges reflect that focus. Instead of building out light shades first and treating deeper tones as an extension, Ami Colé started from the darkest shade and worked outward, developing tones for rich, ebony skin through medium skin with olive undertones. It’s a small structural choice, but one that shapes how the whole product line gets developed.

Formulas across the line are vegan, cruelty-free, and talc-free, developed after N’Diaye-Mbaye surveyed hundreds of women about their routines and frustrations with existing products. That research shaped decisions down to texture and finish, not just shade matching.

The brand built a following quickly, picking up coverage from Vogue, Allure, and Marie Claire, and moving into Sephora in 2024. Early backing came from investors including Imaginary Ventures, Debut Capital, and L’Oréal’s BOLD venture arm, along with angel investors like Hannah Bronfman.

FAQ

How do I know which shade will match my skin tone?

The line runs six shades, developed starting from the deepest tone and working lighter, rather than the other way around. Checking the shade description against undertone (warm, neutral, or olive) rather than skin tone alone gives the most accurate match — most fit issues come from matching depth but skipping undertone.

Is this formula suitable for oily or combination skin, or only dry skin?

The formulas are built with hydrating ingredients, which makes them a strong fit for normal to dry skin. Oily skin types can still wear these products comfortably, though setting with a light powder in the T-zone helps hold the finish longer through the day.

Are the ingredients actually clean and safe for sensitive skin?

The formulas are vegan, cruelty-free, and talc-free, with parabens, phthalates, and common allergens left out. As with any cosmetic, patch-testing on the inner arm first is worth doing for anyone with a history of reactions to fragrance or specific plant extracts.

Will this settle into fine lines or crease throughout the day?

Setting with a light powder specifically in areas prone to creasing (under the eyes, around the nose) prevents most settling. Applying too much product at once is the most common cause of creasing, so building up in thin layers gives a longer-lasting, smoother finish.

Is Ami Colé vegan and cruelty-free?

Yes, every product across the line is formulated vegan and cruelty-free, with several products also labeled reef-safe.

What ingredients does Ami Colé leave out of its formulas?

Products are made without talc, parabens, phthalates, and common fragrance allergens.

Clients Thought

Real people, real routines — here’s what customers keep coming back to say after switching to Ami Colé.

I used to layer four different products just to get my skin to look even. Now it’s this and a lip oil, and I’m out the door in five minutes. My skin still looks like my skin, just calmer.

The undertone match is what got me. Most brands go orange or ashy on me by midday. This one actually holds through a full workday without turning weird.

Renata A., 42

Customer

I have two kids and zero time for a routine. This gets me presentable in under ten minutes, and I don’t feel like I’m hiding under it — I just look like a rested version of myself.
